When we considered raising goats here at Dry Hollow Farm, we first asked ourselves why we were raising goats? What job did we expect our goats to do while they lived out their lives here on the farm?
Did we want to raise meat goats?
For many people goat meat is a regular part of their diet. Some cultures roast goats for special occasions while others simply like the taste and consider it a meat option like chicken, beef, or pork.
Did we want to raise brush goats?
Brush goats are used by many farmers to clear fields and woods as they eat their way through weeds, invasive plants, scrubby trees, and vines.
Did we want to raise fiber goats?
Some goats, such as angora and cashmere, grow valuable fiber and are sheared like sheep. Their fleece is used for spinning into yarn.
Did we want to raise dairy goats?
Dairy goats produce milk, and like cows, can be milked twice a day.
Which one did we pick at Dry Hollow Farm??
Dairy goats, of course!
Although we drink the milk, as well as make cheese and ice cream from it, most of our goats’ milk is used for soapmaking.
